Alain Clavien – History of Journalism

Historically, journalism was born in the press, but not at the same time as the press, points out Alain Clavien, a history professor. In the 18th century, we still talk about notification papers, opinions, political leaflets. The profession was invented at the end of the 19th century.

Alain Clavier, a Professor of history at the University of Fribourg since 2003, is a specialist in the history of the media, the world of ideas and publishing in Switzerland. He holds a degree in political science from the University of Lausanne. His thesis, presented in 1993, is entitled “The Helvetists. Intellectuals and politics in French-speaking Switzerland at the beginning of the century“.

A contributor to the French-language newspaper Le Nouveau Quotidien (1991-1995), Alain Clavien was also a lecturer at the Institute of Journalism and Communication at the University of Neuchâtel (2001-2005).

Director of numerous academic contributions, he is the author of several books, including “La presse romande” (Antipodes, 2017), “Grandeurs et misères de la presse politique” (Antipodes, 2010), “Histoire de la “Gazette de Lausanne”. Le temps du colonel, 1874-1917″, (L’Aire, 1997) and the co-author of “Histoire générale. L’époque contemporaine 1770-1990“, (LEP, 1995).
