In January 2025, Fondation Hirondelle launched a new project aimed at strengthening Chad’s media ecosystem in response to challenges related to social cohesion and the fight against divisive narratives and disinformation in Chad and the wider Central Sahel region. This 24-month project, supported by the European Union, focuses on co-producing content with local media networks and promoting media literacy among both the population and journalists.
The project is structured around three specific objectives:
- Strengthening the capacity of Chadian media to produce reliable, high-quality, and professional information while fostering constructive collaboration with civil society.
- Improving access to reliable information and spaces for dialogue in Chad through the production and dissemination of relevant media content, as well as the implementation of media literacy initiatives.
- Enhancing the quality of information and countering disinformation, notably by encouraging exchanges among media professionals across the sub-region.
To achieve these objectives, a production and training unit will be established in N’Djamena. This structure will focus on producing a one-hour weekly radio program, broadcast in French, Chadian Arabic, and Sara. The program will cover key topics such as citizenship, women’s participation, social cohesion, and the fight against disinformation. The broadcast will be made possible through partnerships with twelve local radio stations, online media, and content creators. Additionally, several training sessions will be organized on journalistic techniques, coverage of local governance, fact-checking, and the use of social media. This project is also part of a broader effort to promote interregional media collaborations. As a result, exchanges and co-productions with professionals from Mali, Niger, and Burkina Faso—engaged in Fondation Hirondelle projects—will be conducted throughout the initiative.
Fondation Hirondelle is pleased to share its expertise and experience to contribute to strengthening the media ecosystem and promoting reliable, high-quality information in Chad and the Central Sahel region.
