Martin Faye – Reporting under a « Democratorship »

Behind the democratic facade, lurks an authoritarian regime: “democraship”. Journalists are now facing this hybrid on 4 continents. Martin Faye, a journalist in Africa for 40 years, identifies for us the limitations and possibilities of working in this context.

Martin Faye has a long and rich experience in radio and in the management of media projects in Africa. He started his career at the Public Radio of Senegal (RTS), where he held numerous positions. He also taught radio techniques for many years at Cesti in Dakar, the Institute of Journalism of Cheikh Anta Diop University.

Martin Faye devoted the second part of his career to media development on the continent. He headed Intermedia-Consultants, an organisation created with the support of the SDC (Swiss Development Cooperation) to strengthen and promote community media in Africa. He has thus actively participated in the creation of community radio stations in Burkina Faso, Comoros, Cameroon, DRC, Guinea, Madagascar, Mali, Niger and Togo. In this capacity, he is considered as an African expert of reference. Organisations such as the International Organisation of the Francophonie (OIF) or the World Bank have called on his services.

Martin Faye joined Fondation Hirondelle in 2007 as Project Manager in the Central African Republic, where he managed and developed the Radio Ndeke Luka project. He is now the representative of Fondation Hirondelle in Mali, where he manages the Studio Tamani project.
