Pool of Lusophone Journalism trainers

Objective

Fondation Hirondelle aims to establish a pool of trainers to strengthen the skills of radio, TV, and print journalists, and online content producers in Lusophone African countries.
This pool will consist of media professionals with expertise in journalism and capacity building. Candidates should be familiar with Fondation Hirondelle’s mission, values, editorial charter, and professional code of conduct. Selected candidates may be engaged until December 2026.

Initially, the pool will be used to implement activities for a project tackling disinformation in Guinea-Bissau. This project is designed by aconsortium, including the Media Foundation for West Africa (MFWA), Reporters Without Borders (RSF), and Fondation Hirondelle (FH). Activities will take place betweenJanuary 2025 and May 2026.

The trainers’ work will be coordinated by Fondation Hirondelle’s Editorial Manager and Program Manager.


Project
activities and trainers’ responsibilities

  • Develop practical training programs focused on ethical issues, the fundamentals of radio, TV, and online journalism, human rights coverage, and fact-checking.
  • Organize a series of three five-day practical training sessions for journalists in Guinea-Bissau on the above-mentioned topics.
  • Identify and select 10 media initiatives in Guinea-Bissau through a call for expressions of interest, mainly targeting radio stations and online media, for 3-10 days of tailored support. These initiatives may include existing programs or the development of new content.
  • Provide in-person coaching for selected media outlets and conduct follow-up mentoring online.
  • Contribute to an online knowledge-sharing platform focused on the topics mentioned above.

These tasks will be carried out with the support of a local assistant.
Travel to Guinea-Bissau will be required, and costs will be covered by Fondation Hirondelle.


Required profile

  • Background in journalism and/or relevant experience in the field.
  • Experience in curriculum development and conducting training sessions.
  • Experience in a Lusophone country in Africa.
  • Fluency in Portuguese is required to carry out project activities in Guinea-Bissau. Knowledge of Creole is an asset.
  • Proficiency in either English or French is required to work with Fondation Hirondelle’s project management team.


Application process

Interested candidates can submit a proposal covering all or part of the activities, depending on their expertise and availability during the project period.

The submission must include:

  • An updated CV, preferably in European format.
  • A narrative proposal including the following:
    • A proposal document (max. 4 pages) describing your strengths and motivation for the role, your working methodology, and your training approach.
    • Availability and references: An additional one-page document detailing your availability between 2025 and 2026 (a table or calendar may be used), along with links to past significant work. Also, include at least three references, two of which must be recent supervisors/clients.
    • Your daily rate (excluding tax). No other expenses need to be included.
  • The submission must be written in English or French.
  • Proof of registration as independent consultant, where relevant.


Selection process

Applications will be assessed based on experience relevance, language skills, and the ability to meet project-specific needs. Selected candidates will be included in Fondation Hirondelle’s trainer pool. They will either be contacted for upcoming activities or placed on a reserve list for future projects.
