What role can journalism play in Humanitarian contexts ? Is there such a thing as “Humanitarian Journalism” ?

"The New Humanitarian" is the new name of the former UN information agency (IRIN), whose team became independent in March 2019 and set up as an NGO. The New Humanitarian takes on humanitarian journalism.

Director of "The New Humanitarian", Heba Aly promotes a model of information produced in countries in crisis primarily by local or national journalists, to inform the humanitarian world and beyond. Arguments: local journalists know their country better than anyone else, they speak the local languages and stay in the country. Unlike reporters sent from the “North”, local journalists in the “South” stay on the spot and they can follow the story over the long term in a more sustainable and less costly way, even if the challenges and risks remain high.
